An original Victorian pendant in the shape of a heart padlock. Made from tortoise shell and cut-out 9ct gold work. The top ring opens and closes.

Few images are more romantic than the heart, and this motif was very popular during Queen Victoria's reign. The queen had a huge impact on jewellery design, and her love for Prince Albert was reflected in the sentimental pieces created during the early Victorian era. This pendant typically forms part of such romantic jewellery, as it also has elements of foliage in the delicate gold design. The ring on the top of the heart opens, so that you can attach the pendant to a variety of chains (depending on your mood) - making it a versatile piece!

Tortoise shell was a favoured material during this era because it was lightweight and fairly easy to mould when heated. The intricate metal pattern was pressed onto the warm tortoise shell, and as it cooled it tightened around the material and held it in place. This was a common technique and the result was called pique jewellery.
